Nitro Engines

Whether for aircraft, helicopter, boat or car, nitro engines are available to suite every application and use. We are stockists of leading brand engines by SC, OS, Evolution, Irvine, and Force.
Reliability is paramount and as production techniques and designs improve, the modern engines of today represent both quality and effieciency at very affordable prices. Depending on the size of engine you require, prices start at below £30 for a .99cc.

2 Stroke Nitro Engines

A typical nitro engine found in a RC aircraft operates on the 2 cycle (2 stroke ) engine operating principle.  Unlike most normal 2 stroke engines , nitro engines do not have a conventional spark plug.   Instead, a glow plug does the work of igniting the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.  In this respect, nitro engines are similar to a diesel engine.  In both a nitro and diesel engine, a glow plug is energised during starting which causes the element to heat up and glow (hence the name "glow" plugs).  This hot, glowing plug ignites the air/fuel mixture.  Once the engine is started, the power source to the glow plug is turned off and the element continues to glow from the heat of combustion.  So, the glow plug is energised only during initial start up, and after the nitro engine starts to run, the combustion process is self-sustaining and the engine will usually continue to run until the nitro fuel runs out in the tank.

Many modellers insist on using 4-stroke engines because they have a wide power range in that they provide more torque at a lower rpm and sound much quieter than their 2 stroke counterparts. They are, however, somewhat more expensive and more complicated than 2-strokes and require a bit more maintenance to operate properly.

Instead of intake and exhaust ports, a 4-stroke engine has intake and exhaust valves. The crankshaft drives a cam assembly and lifter rods, and tappets and valve springs open and close the valves at the right times. Four-strokes produce a fair amount of power, but they’re at their peak at a lower rpm range than 2-stroke engines of the same size. In comparison, the power of a typical .90 4-stroke is roughly equivalent to that of a .60 2-stroke engine. Prices start at around £85.00 for a .30 size four stroke.
